SDRplay announces the nRSP-ST
SDRplay Limited was announcing the imminent launch of the “nRSP-ST”, an All-in-one, Plug-and-play Networked SDR Receiver. The “nRSP-ST” was demonstrated publicly for the first time at the UK National Hamfest in Newark.
Jon Hudson, SDRplay Sales and Marketing Director said “This exciting new product addresses the needs of radio enthusiasts who want a ‘plug-and-play’ solution for remote reception. As well as achieving this, we have addressed typical internet bandwidth limitations with the creation of a novel “IQ Lite” mode, which efficiently delivers channels of IQ data. We have also introduced the ability to control and store IQ recordings at the remote location. We think the nRSP-ST will be ideal for anyone wanting a wideband remote receiver without needing computer skills and hours of set-up time and ongoing maintenance at the remote location. We are very much looking forward to making the product available as soon as possible. We are aiming to launch the nRSP-ST in time for the holiday shopping season and aiming at a price of just under $500 USD before tax.
The nRSP-ST key features:
- A truly “plug and play” integrated, networked general coverage receiver:
- Combines a receiver, a host computer and a whole lot more – all in one box!
- Apply power and connect to the internet (Ethernet or Wi-Fi) and the nRSP-ST is automatically accessible from anywhere
- The 14-bit ADC full featured wideband SDR receiver covers all frequencies from 1kHz through VLF, LF, MW, HF, VHF, UHF and L-band to 2GHz, with no gaps
- Remotely monitor up to 10MHz of spectrum at a time from a choice of 3 antennas
- Multi-platform SDRconnectTM software supports local operation or remote access on Windows, MacOS or Linux platforms
- The nRSP-ST & SDRconnectTM are configurable for available network bandwidth:
- In “Full IQ” mode, the nRSP-ST provides IQ data transfer of the visible spectrum bandwidth (e.g.for high-speed LAN or superfast internet connectivity)
- In “IQ Lite” mode, the nRSP-ST provides IQ data of channels up to 192kHz wide (e.g. for digital decoding by the client)
- In “Compact” mode the nRSP-ST provides compressed audio (ideal for slower internet connections)
- Supports multiple client connections with a simultaneous mixture of connection modes
- All modes support visualization of up to 10MHz spectrum bandwidth
- Two remote connection options: Use a remote SDRconnect client or
- Use the built-in web-server for remote access from any web browsing capable device, including Android/iOS tablets and phones
- The nRSP-ST offers the ability to record IQ and audio files to a NAS (network attached storage) device if available on the LAN
- Flash upgradable for future feature enhancements

RSP1B and RSPdx-R2

On 26th January, SDRplay announced a new radio spectrum processor, the RSP1B.
The SDRplay RSP1B is an enhanced version of the popular RSP1A powerful wideband full featured 14-bit SDR which covers the RF spectrum from 1kHz to 2GHz. The RSP1B comes in a rugged black painted steel case and has significantly improved noise performance. All it needs is a computer and an antenna to provide excellent communications receiver functionality. It comes with a choice of SDRunoTM for Windows and multiplatform SDRconnectTM SDR software for Windows, MacOS and Linux (supplied free of charge by SDRplay). You can monitor up to 10MHz of spectrum at a time. A documented API allows developers to create new demodulators or applications around the platform.
The key advantages of the RSP1B vs the RSP1A are:
- It is housed in a strong black painted steel case.
- It has significantly improved noise performance below 1MHz (i.e for MF, LF and below), and in the 50-60 MHz region. There are also noticeable noise improvements in the 3.5-5.5MHz and 250-320MHz spectrum.
- It has improved signal handling at HF frequencies.
We, at Anico Hamshop believe that this additional RSP will give people an exciting additional choice at the budget-end of the quality SDR receiver market.

At Hamvention in Dayton, Ohio (2022 May 20-22), SDRplay was demonstrating the core underlying technology behind what we’re calling “SDRconnect”.
“SDRconnect” will be the new name for the multiplatform version of SDRuno (up till now we called it SDRuno V2). At Dayton, SDRplay was demonstrating the completely rewritten Core DSP engine for Spectrum and Waterfall displays – with the prototype software running on a Mac M1 computer. SDRplay was also showing networking capability by remotely accessing an RSP based in the UK. This is still an early stage demo, and the SDRPlay’s software team have a lot to do to complete the graphical user interface.
Work is underway on the new graphical user interface which:
· Retains the style and popular features of SDRuno
· Offers a more consistent and intuitive layout
· Addresses fixes and improvements suggested by users ever since SDRuno was first adopted.
SDRplay plans to release the first version of SDRconnect before the end of 2022.SDRplay is promising that SDRconnect will fully support the older obsolete RSP2 and RSP2pro products, although the original RSP1 (phased out in 2017) will not be supported by SDRconnect. SDRuno V1.42 will continue to be available for RSP1 users).
The new graphical user interface will bring a lot of advantages based on what users have been asking for - like more consistency in the way panels and menus are organised making it more intuitive and easy to use, and the ability to lock panels together. Regarding product availability, like many equipment manufacturers SDRPlay is also suffering from component shortages.

SDRplay has now released Version 1.41 of SDRuno . It includes the much requested full scheduler facility which allows you to set up numerous recording events for your RSP. As well as providing all the expected calendar options (time of day, date, start and stop times, repeating options and so on), you can also set the ‘profile’ for each recording – this allows you to pre-set frequencies, bandwidths, demodulator options (AM/FM/USB/LSB etc.), choice of filters and antenna port selection. Additionally you can choose the settings for connectivity to other third party software or the running of a specific plugin. This video introduces the scheduler: https://youtu.be/fURaBmYcPbg
Also available with SDRuno V1.41 is a new ADSB plugin which simplifies the way you can use an SDRplay RSP for decoding real time transponder signals from aircraft in your vicinity. You simply ensure you have a suitable antenna for 1.090 GHz and launch SDRuno and the new ADSB plugin. This new Plugin works with freely available Virtual Radar Server software which collects the data from the SDRuno plugin and produces a clickable map that shows all the aircraft found in real time. Anyone who has an RSPduo (the dual tuner SDR) can simultaneously listen to the corresponding ATC voice channel to monitor the pilot interaction with air traffic control. Time to explore diversity with the RSPduo
If people have big gardens, now is a perfect time to experiment with multiple HF antennas and explore just what can be achieved with the RSPduo both for noise reduction and also signal enhancement. This recent video demonstrates how good the RSPduo can be for signal enhancement.
